Apt name. Because after eating Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce you’ll feel like your mouth has been stung by a thousand bees (that happen to also be on fire and maybe even carrying mini daggers in their little bee hands.) It’s an ultra death for sure. Blair’s 100% delivers on its promise, it’s wicked hot. And if you’re looking for a “I double dog dare you” hot sauce, this is a good one to try. But is there more here? How’s the flavor? Can you taste it beyond the heat? Is it big enough to balance against this intense spiciness? And how usable is it? We dig into a bottle of Blair’s Ultra Death to tell you all about it.
Flavor
You can see right from Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce’s ingredients list what a ride you’re in for: Habanero chili, Carolina Reaper chili, cayenne chili, vinegar, serrano chili, salt, natural chili extract, tomato purée, acetic acid, ghost chili, scorpion chili, fresh garlic, food starch, spices, and ascorbic acid.
What a line-up.
We’ll get into the chilies and heat below, but it’s obvious that some of the hottest peppers in the world are in this hot sauce. And many sit atop the list. But let’s talk flavor.
There’s actually a very tasty smell to Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce when you first open the bottle. You get that vinegar, along with a sweet, peppery fragrance. And it’s there on first taste, too — a sweet, vinegary flavor upfront. But it quickly becomes a four-alarm fire moment, with the heat hitting (and hitting HARD.) It goes to the back of your throat and overtakes the experience.
There’s garlic and other spices here, but I don’t know if you can actually point to them in the flavor profile. Blair’s Ultra Death Hot Sauce is like nearly every super-hot sauce in this way — a straight shot to the heat. But we’ll give it props for having some flavor here before the hammer falls. And frankly, most aren’t buying this sauce for flavor as it is.
The sodium sits at 75 mg per teaspoon (or 3% of your daily allowance.) But, really. Does it matter? I don’t see a ton of people downing a full teaspoon of this at a time. This is more a drop at a time (and pray) kind of experience.
Heat Balance
When you star some of the hottest peppers in the world all in one bottle of hot sauce, you know you’re going to feel some pain. And yup — Blair’s Ultra Death is really freakin’ hot.
I mean, look at this list. Habanero peppers (no slouch in the heat department themselves at 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville heat units) star up top, followed by the incredibly wicked Carolina Reaper (1.4 million to 2.2 million SHU), cayenne peppers (30,000 to 50,000 SHU), serrano peppers (10,000 to 23,000 SHU), ghost peppers (855,000 to 1 million SHU roughly), and scorpion peppers (1.2 million to 2 million SHU.)
Top it all off, there’s chili pepper extract here, meaning pure heat is an ingredient. Altogether, Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce comes in at 1.1 million Scoville Heat Units. That’ll make the devil envy when it comes to heat. Put it this way, Blair’s Ultra Death is approximately the same spiciness as a fresh ghost pepper. That’s one of the top chilies for YouTube chili pepper challenges, so prepare to sweat.
Is it balanced? Well, crazy heat is always the story with extreme sauces. It’s the whole point. So, no. The spiciness way outpaces flavor. But there’s a bit of flavor here too. And as a sauce that’ll punch you in the face, it does its job very well.
Usability
Just like any super-spicy hot sauce, usability is low. Of course, use it a drop or two at a time to heat up a soup or sauce. It’s an excellent way to spice things up via dilution — and very economical at that. A drop or two at a time does wonders.
Just use caution: The opening is almost the size of a nickel, leading you to think, maybe a tablespoon or two on your taco would be fine. It will not be fine. Take it easy or pay the price. A million Scoville heat units will have sweat and tears appearing in no time.
Collectibility
Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce nails its packaging. The skull on fire is a great representation of who you’ll feel if you don’t respect the sauce. Between the name and the look, your eye is immediately drawn to it amid a hot sauce line-up. You just can’t ignore it.
The Score
With its 1.1 million Scoville heat units, Blair’s Ultra Death Sauce walks the talk of its name. This is extreme heat, so use caution with it. This sauce has some sweet flavor behind the heat…but who are we kidding, it’s all about the spiciness and wicked packaging here. And Blair’s nails both.
